Headstone issues.

I posted about this last week, but I still don't know what to do.

Opie's headstone arrived. And it was wrong. And I can't decide if I should go through the hassle of getting it fixed. The pros and cons:

- I feel bad that there has been so much hassle around this already
+ All of it was *their* fault, none of it was mine
- The way the headstones are set into the ground, the grass is probably going to grow around the margins anyway.
+ It's not what I wanted or what I ordered.
- Ordering a new stone is going to delay this process even further.
- Ordering a new stone will (presumably) cost The Animal Rescue League money.

When I called today, the woman I spoke with *clearly* didn't want to deal with the hassle of reordering the stone. She was apparently the one who wrote the plot number on the order form (in a different handwriting, with a different pen than the rest of the form), and said that it was not uncommon for her to do that. I guess the guy (Rob) who took my order simply left "line 3" (the line where the plot number would go) blank, thinking that that would, you know, leave it blank. She (no clue what her name is), seeing it was blank, "helpfully" wrote the plot number in, which is how it ended up being on the order. She said if I had really not wanted the plot number, then the guy, Rob, needed to have left a note specifically explaining that.

Um, OK, great. How is this my fault?

The current stone is OK, but it bugs me that I was specifically asked if I wanted the number on there, and I said no, and then it still got printed on there anyway. So here it is, because I'm shit at making my own decisions:

Poll #1411554 Opie's Headstone

Should I leave the headstone the way it is, or should I make them fix it?

Leave it, it's fine. Let's just get this over with already.
Make them fix it. The screw up was their fault, not yours.
Something else which I will explain in the comments.

You could plaster something over the plot number, like a plastic-encased photo of Opie. :) Or a little metal cat, even lawn-ornament style stuck in the ground in front of the number. Just a thought!

The problem is not just that the number is there but that its being there -- and creating a third line of type -- makes his name and dates smaller than they would be if there were only two lines of type.

Yeah, they fucked up. I'd say at this point, just ask yourself what matters most for your own personal closure: do you want it just right, or do you want to have a gravesite for Opie right now? Either is totally legit, you just have to pick one. If the former, raise a fit to get it done right quickly at no charge to you. If the latter, raise a fit to get some money back and make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else?

Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who still has Marlowe's ashes in an urn in a box I still can't bear to break the seal on, three years later. (Kept in a place of honor, but still...)
