What the fuck does "pork barrel spending" mean (other than that John McCain is so old, he uses terms like "pork barrel spending")?

Hmmm. OK. Well, maybe John McCain would sound like less of a fogey if he said "programs that only a few benefit from, but that everyone pays for."

And doesn't that happen all of the time anyway? I mean, I've never gone to the Grand Canyon (for example), but I'm pretty OK with my tax dollars paying for the park rangers and whatnot there.

And isn't the war in Iraq a prime example of that? I'm in no way going to benefit from funneling an oil pipeline through Iraq, but my tax dollars are funding this fucked up war anyway, right?

everyone refers to this as pork barrel. pork is/are the things written into a bill to appease lobbyists, not related to the rest of the continuity of the bill.

for example, the bill to legalize medical marijuana in michigan also includes that 1 million dollars should go to putting new thermometers in every police station.
