Needle Exchange.

I just found a video on YouTube about the needle exchange I used to use in Chicago. This was actually the exact location I always went to -- Humboldt Park. I did needle exchange in Pittsburgh as well, but it was far less organized -- you left a message on a voicemail saying what you needed, and then someone called you back and set up a meet, usually in a grocery store parking lot or similar locale.

It amazes me how completely the same that van looks. I mean, it's been more than ten years, and the only thing in that video that wasn't familiar was the Naloxone. Aside from that, it's exactly how I remembered it.

Thanks for sharing this.

So, there wasn't a van system in Pittsburgh?

The Chicago system seems more personal, as in the people who volunteer seem to care about the addicts.

From what I understand, there was a van system, but when I was using the program (2000-ish), it was just the volunteer meetup thing. I will definitely say that the Pittsburgh volunteers cared about the addicts; they would load up their own personal cars and go meet people in parking lots, you know?

Of course, things in Pittsburgh have changed since the county declared a health emergency. Now, all the cloak and dagger bullshit is gone & people go to the Health Department building.

Good point. I wasn't really thinking. Jeez.

I think I've heard too many methadone clinic horror stories involving poor treatment towards patients, though.

I would suspect that depends a lot on whether the clinic is a paid clinic or a free clinic.

Me, I went to Progressive Medical Specialists, which is a paid clinic. I had a perfectly fine experience there, but when I did a temporary job in Cleveland and had to go to a clinic there (which one? I forget) I remember that it was miserable.
