Disconnected.

Remember how I used to "borrow" my neighbor's wifi? Yes, well, after more than a year of free wifi, I returned to Pittsburgh to discover that that network is now locked.

Anybody know anything about how to get wifi? I'm an idiot about stuff like that.

At any rate, until I figure that out, it's back to dial up for me. Which, among other things, means that uploading the rest of my Antioch photos (and videos) is going to be a looooooooooong process.

You'll need to get an ISP that offers high-speed (DSL, cable, FIOS) and they'll give you a wireless router.

OK, I seriously don't know what that means.

I have AOL -- will they give me a wireless router? Or do I need to call some other company? If so, who? What would I even find that under in the phone book?

AOL isn't an ISP in the same way that Verizon and Comcast are. It just provides you software (and they still have dial-up numbers? wow! that's a left over from the pre-high-speed era when all anybody had in order to get online was a regular phone line.) You'll need to get Verizon or Comcast to get high speed access. It comes through your phone line or your cable, so you have to work through the phone company or cable company.

So if I have a Verizon land line, I can just add it on to that?

Yep, you certainly can.

Arrgh -- they have a two year plan and a one year plan, both of which involve "early termination fees." But the price of the month-to-month plan would cost basically as much as doing one of the longer plans and taking the hit on early cancellation. Blerg.

Check out DSL Extreme. They have plans for as little as $15/month which might be less than you're paying for dial-up.
