I had a doctor's appointment this morning. I got up, went to Wilkinsburg, yadda yadda yadda. When I was done I still had a fair amount of time to play with before I went swimming, so I figured I'd go home, pee, check my email, and just generally hang out for a bit. I walked in my door and headed for the stairs, and then all of a sudden it was Monkey Fighting Snakes on a Monday to Friday Plane:

Surprise!

Apparently it was a black rat snake

Which are common in this area

After leaving randomly hysterical messages for Mark and Catherine, I went across the street to Al's. Al turned out to be way more afraid of snakes than I was, but the construction guys over there got Josh's attention, and he came over and helped me catch it.

He and Dan were total boys about it, showing off and trying to scare people, and their goofing off allowed the snake to get away. They recaptured it, tho.

Boys. :)

They did call animal control, who apparently came and picked up the snake after I had already gone to the swimming pool. I'm glad they didn't hurt it -- I was kind of concerned when Josh first came inside. I think if I'd known at the time that it was a non-venomous snake, I probably just would have encouraged it outside and into the yard all by myself.

Black Rats are pretty mellow, but yeah - to find one inside at random would freak me out!

For future snake reference, I believe there are only 3 venomous snakes native to this region. The rattlesnake (easily identifiable), the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake (which the internet tells me is endangered) and the northern copperhead. I generally assume that *any* snake I come across in urban and suburban settings that isn't rattling at me is non-venomous.

THE MOAR YOU KNOW!

Wow. Yeah, as much as I love nature and think all creatures are "Oooh, neat!" - that would have scared the crap out of me. I can't help thinking that it was slithering around on the steps muttering, "HowdidIgethere?HowdidIgethere?IwannagooutsideHowdoIgetbackoutside?"

I've seen those snakes on my street. Dead, though.

Good pictures, btw.

Bugger...
I can't see the images from my work computer - I'm quite excited to check this out when I get home.

Dang, though.
